(10) One argument presented is that Historic Accounts are not always cut & dry/ certain. Discuss 2 examples within this chapter that support this idea. (pg 18.28)
On the first page of Chapter 2, it is stated that “The documents and maps are unclear on the point, but it appears that the initial contacts preceded the famous voyage of Juan Ponce de León in 1513 by a number of years.” Historians are unsure of how many years Florida had contact with people before Ponce de León.
Historians aren’t exactly sure of the location of the Spanish Caribbean discoveries of landmass. “Where it depicted the Spanish Caribbean discoveries, there appears a narrow landmass that is possibly the Florida peninsula but is more likely the coast of Central America.”
(1)
Explore the discussion of the Fountain of Youth and its validity (pg 19).
The Fountain of Youth should not be considered valid, as there are no accounts that confirm that it ever existed, only legends. No reports or narratives were made either.
(5) Describe political or social policy mentioned within the chapter. Be sure to include:
Old Spain rulers/ruling bodies:
They had Kings, such as Charles V
New World rulers/ruling bodies:
The Adelantado were the new world rulers of the time. Ponce de Leon was one, and so was de Soto.
Adelantado:
Self financing conqueror and direct representative of the king and the governor of the islands of Bimini and Florida.

(1) What animal was introduced to Florida by de Soto? Real Razorback Hogs
(2)What is the “microbial invasion”? When Narvaez’s army entered Florida and battled with the Native Apalachee, they got ill within a month. They continued to follow the leader, and the number of members in the army swindled down because of illness, exposure, and starvation to only 15 people.
(5) Present reasons supporting settlement of Florida AND arguments against the settlement of Florida based on the text of Chapter 2
Against:
Ponce de Leon traveled by boat to reach Florida, went through several other places, and never secured an ownership of Florida for Spain.
The army that belonged to Narvaez barely survived within Florida and did not dominate the state.
For:
Hernando de Soto was able to make camp at a native village named Uzita in Florida and settle with the many animals he brought. He even received a translator so that he could understand the Natives.
(1) What do you find most interesting about this article? I find the long journey Ponce de Leon and his crew took to find Florida fascinating. They had to travel everywhere and back to Cuba several times before finally making it to Florida. And when they did, the Natives attacked.
