Who was involved? (Identify the people, groups, or organizations)

For the first article, the victim was named Tyre Sampson, the commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer services is named Nikki Fried, Orange County’s Sheriff’s Office is being sent to investigate and consider criminal charges, Trevor Arnold is the attorney for Orlando Slingshot.

For the second article, the victim was named Tyre Sampson, the commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer services is named Nikki Fried, Quest Engineering and Failure Analysis Inc.,

Where did this event happen? (Be specific) This event took place in Orlando, Florida at an amusement park ride called the Orlando Slingshot, which is located in Orange county. The place is along International Drive.

When did this event happen? (Date, month, time frame, and/or year) The event happened March 24, 2022.

What happened? (Include sequence of events in complete sentences)

Tyre was a teenage football player who had wanted to ride the Orlando Slingshot. Anderson states that “Tyre weighed 383 pounds (173 kilograms), well above the ride manual’s weight limit of 287 pounds (130 kilograms).” He had been too big to ride the Slingshot the way it was designed. In response to this trivial issue, the Slingshot’s sensors had been adjusted to double the size of the opening area to allow for Sampson’s bigger frame and wider openings.

In doing so, this proved for the ride to be unsafe. In Mike Schneider’s Article, he states that “The average opening for restraints on the seat… was 3.3 inches… However, the opening of the restraint for the seat used by Tyre Sampson, upon inspection, was as much as 7.1 inches…” This allowed the slingshot to be too loose for safety, as the gap between the bar holding the person in place and the person was twice as big as it should have been.

According to Anderson, “Fourteen-year-old Tyre Sampson fell to his death from the 400-foot (122-meter) drop tower ride operated by Orlando Slingshot in March.”

Afterwards, investigations happened, and the family of Tyre Sampson sued the company. The police were sent to look for any criminal activity that may have caused this event instead.

According to Anderson, “Requirements are being put in place that will ensure Florida amusement rides are safe going forward.”

Why is this event relevant? (how does this article connect to the theme you choose from our textbook?)

I felt that this event was relevant to the pre-disney tourist attractions theme. Some of those rides exist today, from before Disney. More rides have sprouted up from after Disney like the Orlando Slingshot. I picked these articles because the book did not highlight possible accidents that tourist destinations had during the pre-Disney years and I felt that the event would highlight the importance of safety when it comes to tourist traps.

Reflection (for full credit, you must include support with each reflection)

In reading this article, I was both shocked and angered by this event. This event could have been avoided, had the operators of the ride not tamper with the sensors that allowed for ride safety. Signs are specifically designed to keep riders safe, requiring them to be a specific height and weight. The Orlando Slingshot abused this safety by allowing Tyre Sampson to ride something he shouldn’t have been allowed on.

If I had been operating the ride, I wouldn’t have allowed Sampson to ride. I would be losing a little bit of money in this refusal, but I wouldn’t be sued for thousands, meaning that I wouldn’t be losing much money in the overall process. Safety is first when it comes to already dangerous rides.

The connection with these articles and what we have been learning in class is that before Disney, there were many attractions and places to visit. Many accidents could have happened because of the less strict laws on the emphasis of safety and laws to regulate the businesses.
