Course Reflection

Course Reflection: Florida History has helped me learn about Florida as a whole and who we used to be. After reading both A Land Remembered and The History of Florida, I feel like I know more about Florida than I did before. We learned about the history of slaves and the role Black Americans had in shaping Florida against slavery and segregation. The Calusa were a powerful clan of Native Americans who struggled to keep their areas of Florida safe from the new Americans and Spaniards, and their victories in destroying forts and winning in their missions. We learned about destinations before Disney that allowed for tourists to enjoy Florida. These tourist attractions reflected Florida’s deep history and included places that still exist today. Some tourist trap examples are Ripley's, GatorLand, Serpentarium, Parrot Jungle, Weeki Wachee, and Cypress Gardens. These tourist attractions helped grow Florida into the powerful state it is today.
